FOREST TYPES WITHIN
THE TNR/ BAHUAHA -SONENE:
Seven distinguishable
forest types are represented, From sub-tropical
moist forest in the lowlands (Alt. 250 m,
mean annual rainfall of 2,500 mm) to cloud
forest (Alt. 1500+ m, mean annual rainfall
of 4000+ mm), as well as tropical savanna
ecosystems in the East of the reserve (the
Pampas del Heath).
These forest types are home to over 20,000
plant species, the base and explanation for
the incredible amount of animal diversity
present. Scientific investigations in the
area over the last twenty years have
identified:
900 birds species (more than all the bird
species in the continental USA and
approximately 1/5 of the world total).
91 mammals,
1230 butterflies,
127 Amphibians and Reptiles, and so on...
The area truly lives up to its title as one
of the biodiversity centers of the world. |
