All you need to know about travel to Tambopata

02 December 2025 (113 visits)

Tambopata offers travelers looking for a jungle trip some of the wildest, best conserved habitats in the Amazon and the world. It is among the select group of “must-see” nature destinations in Peru and South America.

The biggest town in the Tambopata region is Puerto Maldonado, and most travelers fly there to begin their jungle trip. Puerto Maldonado can be reached via a quick flight from Lima or Cusco, and there is even a bus service between Cusco and Puerto Maldonado. The view from the plane just before landing at Puerto Maldonado offers a foretaste of what those who visit Tambopata can expect during their jungle tour.

Although there are farms and roads around the town, these are dwarfed by the sea of Amazon rainforest that stretches into the distance, cut through by meandering coffee-colored rivers. From our jungle lodge, 68 kilometers from town, beneath the high rainforest canopy, monkeys, toucans, macaws and even jaguars can be spotted, with the help of expert local guides.

The protected and well-preserved habitats of Tambopata make it one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Here in our forests, there are more than 1000 species of butterflies, over 100 species of mammals, 600 species of birds, and hundreds of species of trees and plants! During their visit, our guests are likely to see monkeys, capybaras, parrots and macaws, caimans, toucans, and many more beautiful animals.

To get to our remote eco-lodge, located in protected Amazon rainforest, you first need to travel to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the National Reserve and the capital of Peru’s Madre de Dios region. At Puerto Maldonado airport, or from the local bus terminal, we meet all our guests for a short drive to the river port, followed by a relaxing boat ride deep into the rainforest to our jungle lodge. Our boats leave every day from Puerto Maldonado, timed to coincide with the daily arrival times of commercial flights from Lima and Cusco, so our guests can make their lodge transfer easily and smoothly.

What your rainforest visit means

In Peru ecotourism has helped make it possible to create national reserves and save the forests of the Amazon basin from destruction. By implementing our ecotourism-based conservation model (see our video), we are ensuring the forests will be around for future generations to appreciate. Pioneering projects like Tambopata Ecolodge, which was established in 1991, serve as a conservation model, by showing how responsible ecotourism can support conservation initiatives.
