For many nature lovers and adventure travel fans an Amazon tour in Peru is a dream they may have had for many years. Nature documentaries have made the Amazon rainforests of Peru and South America famous for their pristine jungle and extraordinary wildlife, and here in Tambopata we help to protect one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth.
But, when you plan your rainforest trip in South America, and even if you choose Tambopata for its combination of great wildlife and easy access from Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu, it is important to understand that the reality of an Amazon rainforest tour might differ from expectations conjured by National Geographic or the BBC’s David Attenborough documentaries.
When many people think of the Amazon jungle, they often imagine a forest filled with insects, with rivers and lakes inhabited by piranhas and anacondas. While visitors to our jungle lodge can see piranhas and anacondas, while recognizing with the help of our expert guides the crucial role they play in the highly biodiverse ecosystems of the Amazon, it is also important to understand that they pose no threat to us as we explore the rainforest. And while the rainforest is certainly filled with thousands of species of insects, a good insect repellent and the right clothing mean that even the potential discomfort that might be caused by mosquitoes can be managed and avoided.
Peruvian Amazon jungle lodges like our own offer exceptional wildlife observation experiences, in places like our Tambopata home where nature has been protected by law for many decades. But, it is important to remember that the Amazon rainforest is enormous. This means that the experience you will have during your Peru jungle trip will not be like an African safari, where on open savannah big animals can be seen easily and in large numbers from an SUV.
In the Amazon, it is necessary to explore trails on foot, and rivers and lakes by small boat, in search of the rainforest’s often elusive creatures. In addition to the expert local knowledge of a professional naturalist guide, time, patience and –very often- a dose of good luck may be needed to spot and photograph among the trees those beautiful examples of major fauna you will have dreamed for so long of seeing for yourself!
