How to get to Tambopata, and what to see

12 April 2024 (351 visits)

Tambopata is an area of protected Amazon rainforest in southeastern Peru. To ensure that this pristine habitat could continue to support the animal and plant life to which it is home, in 2000 the Peruvian government created Tambopata National Reserve. At Tambopata Ecolodge, the Private Conservation Area we protect borders the National Reserve.

Tambopata shelters some of the most biodiverse rainforest habitat found anywhere in Peru. It is a remote and wild place, but still easily accessible, and it is this combination that has made it one of the must-see tourist attractions in Peru, and one of the best places in South America to experience the Amazon basin and see wildlife.

The only large town in our region is Puerto Maldonado, and that is where most travelers fly to begin their jungle trip. Travelers who come to Tambopata are drawn by its reputation as one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Our forests are home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds and other creatures, and many hundreds of species of plants and trees. During their visit, travelers can expect to see major Amazon species, including monkeys, macaws and parrots, caimans, anacondas, and even jaguars, the population of which has been growing in recent years, thanks to the success of local conservation efforts

Getting to Tambopata for a stay at our eco-lodge is so quick and easy that it’s possible to enjoy an immersive Amazon rainforest experience as part of a 2-week Peru vacation, over just 3 or 4 days, including traveling time from Lima or Cusco.

To get to us at Tambopata Ecolodge, travelers first need to get to Puerto Maldonado. There are regular flights from Lima or Cusco. Direct flights from Lima take around 1 hour and 40 minutes, and direct flights from Cusco take around 45 minutes.

Once you’ve disembarked from your flight at Puerto Maldonado airport, you’ll find us waiting for you at the arrivals gate, carrying a board with your name on it. And of course, because we take care of everything during our guests’ time with us, following their all-inclusive rainforest package at our jungle lodge, we take all our visitors back to the airport for their return flight, where we assist them with check-in and boarding.

What your rainforest visit means

In Peru ecotourism has helped make it possible to create national reserves and save the forests of the Amazon basin from destruction. By implementing our ecotourism-based conservation model (see our video), we are ensuring the forests will be around for future generations to appreciate. Pioneering projects like Tambopata Ecolodge, which was established in 1991, serve as a conservation model, by showing how responsible ecotourism can support conservation initiatives.
