How will the 2026 2027 affect different parts of Peru?

A recent report by Peru’s Multisector Commission for National Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (ENFEN) supports the government’s Coastal El Niño Alert, and advises that the phenomenon is likely to persist until late April or early May 2027. Current models point to an event of exceptional magnitude between September 2026 and January 2027, while the most likely scenario for February and March ranges from strong to exceptional magnitude, with the phenomenon beginning to weaken during April until more normal conditions are reached.

These forecasts are based on the evolution to date of the 2026–2027 El Niño event and projections for the rainy season, for the period between September 2026 and April 2027.

Between September and November, air temperatures along the Peruvian coast are expected to remain well above normal levels, potentially reaching record highs. Regarding precipitation, above-normal conditions are anticipated on the northern coast, with the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall, starting in November.

In contrast, the southern highlands -including Cusco- and parts of the Amazon region -including Tambopata where we offer our Amazon jungle tours and lodge stays- are likely to experience rainfall below the normal ranges. In previous El Niño years, conditions approaching those defined as “drought” have affected the Amazon region, meaning extremely reduced precipitation during what is normally the rainy season (from November to the end of March).

Looking ahead to the southern hemisphere summer of 2027 (winter in the northern hemisphere), ENFEN is projecting continued above-average rainfall on the northern and central coasts and in the western northern highlands of Peru. Conversely, the southern highlands around Cusco and parts of the Amazon region are expected to experience normal to below-normal rainfall. ENFEN is continuing to monitor oceanic, atmospheric and hydrological conditions in Peru, in order to provide updates on its current forecasts.

What your rainforest visit means

In Peru ecotourism has helped make it possible to create national reserves and save the forests of the Amazon basin from destruction. By implementing our ecotourism-based conservation model (see our video), we are ensuring the forests will be around for future generations to appreciate. Pioneering projects like Tambopata Ecolodge, which was established in 1991, serve as a conservation model, by showing how responsible ecotourism can support conservation initiatives.
