NOW is the best time to visit the Amazon rainforest in Peru!

Our Tambopata Ecolodge and Private Conservation Area are situated on the edge of Tambopata National Reserve, at a riverside location we chose for our comfortable jungle lodge back in 1991.

In our rainforest home, the weather is hot and humid throughout most of the year, but we do experience two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. And for travelers who come to stay with us at our jungle lodge, there are advantages to visiting at any time of the year.

Here in Tambopata, the Amazon jungle is a year-round destination. Although it can rain at any moment, the dry season tends to run from May to November. At this time of year, forest trails are not as muddy and it is easier to get around the rainforest on foot. Parrots and macaws can be seen at clay licks on clear days, and other animals, even including jaguars, can be spotted on riverside beaches, as they emerge from the drier forest conditions to drink or hunt.

But in the Amazon rainforest where we made our home more than 35 years ago, the rainier months are also a great time to visit. The wet season usually extends from November to early April, and it offers visitors the best opportunities to see many species of typical Amazon wildlife.

The trees in the Amazon tend to produce their fruits during the rainiest months, and this makes it a good time to see monkeys and many bird species -including macaws- as they feed. Also, average temperatures are usually a little lower in the rainier months. While jungle trails can be muddy, higher water levels mean better opportunities to spot animals such as caimans and giant otters, or even massive green anacondas, on rivers and lakes.

So, whatever time of year you plan for your Peru vacation, make sure that you include a few extra days once you’ve enjoyed your Cusco visit and Machu Picchu trip, and fly down from the Andes to visit us in the Amazon rainforest, with our comfortable eco-lodge as your base for exploring the Earth’s biggest and most biodiverse wilderness area!

What your rainforest visit means

In Peru ecotourism has helped make it possible to create national reserves and save the forests of the Amazon basin from destruction. By implementing our ecotourism-based conservation model (see our video), we are ensuring the forests will be around for future generations to appreciate. Pioneering projects like Tambopata Ecolodge, which was established in 1991, serve as a conservation model, by showing how responsible ecotourism can support conservation initiatives.
