Rare black spider monkeys have taken up residence near our Amazon jungle lodge

24 August 2026 (181 visits)

This month, just 150 meters (500 feet) from our Tambopata Ecolodge buildings, our guests have been able to photograph and film a family of three black spider monkeys, high up in the canopy. Beyond the Tambopata rainforest we help to protect, this species is endangered and increasingly rare.

For us in Tambopata, this is an indicator of the continued good health of our forests. The possibility of observing certain species in their natural habit is not only a wonderful experience for the travelers who come here from all over the world to venture into the Amazon basin; it is also a sign that the local ecosystem provides the necessary natural conditions to sustain such beautiful animals.

The health of a rainforest is not determined solely by the trees of which it is composed, but also by the animals that are able to live there. Here in Tambopata, for us the presence of these remarkable primates, with their slender profile and long limbs, is a biological indicator of forest integrity.

The spider monkey needs a healthy forest, with plenty of tall trees spread over a wide area, good canopy cover, and the availability of a wide variety of fruits. Because they are primarily frugivorous, spider monkeys depend upon a variety of trees that bear fruit at different times of the year. In other parts of the Amazon, they are also highly sensitive to human pressure, particularly hunting. In areas where human presence and predatory activity are intense, its populations decline rapidly and can disappear completely.

The welcome news that spider monkeys are thriving so close to our eco-lodge, where we offer our guests immersive jungle tours, tells us that the ecosystem that surrounds us is continuing to provide this major species and the trees and plants it is dependent upon with an ideal habitat and a stable and secure future.

What your rainforest visit means

In Peru ecotourism has helped make it possible to create national reserves and save the forests of the Amazon basin from destruction. By implementing our ecotourism-based conservation model (see our video), we are ensuring the forests will be around for future generations to appreciate. Pioneering projects like Tambopata Ecolodge, which was established in 1991, serve as a conservation model, by showing how responsible ecotourism can support conservation initiatives.
