The best place in the world to see rainforest wildlife is the Amazon basin of South America. And the most accessible place to visit the jungle in Peru is our own Tambopata region, via regular flights and buses from Lima and Cusco.
So that you can get the best from your Peru vacation Amazon trip, it is important to remember a few basic tips for an enjoyable and safe jungle trip. When you plan your Amazon visit as part of your Peru travel itinerary, you need to make sure that you’ll be exploring rivers, lakes and forest trails with a professional guide. The best jungle lodges and eco-lodges employ experienced and knowledgeable local guides.
At Tambopata Ecolodge, before you travel to Peru, our sales team will provide you with detailed information on how to prepare for your jungle trip, and they’ll answer all your questions.
Among the information we provide before departure, we offer recommended packing lists, and advice on vaccinations for travel to a tropical forest destination. Our pre-departure travel information includes many tips on what to bring with you. Essential items include a reliable insect repellent, and malaria prophylaxis is also recommended, despite the fact that malaria is very uncommon in our part of the Peruvian Amazon.
But of course, the best way to avoid insect bites when visiting tropical forests is to cover up. You should wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in the jungle to protect your skin from insect bites and any rashes that can be caused by contact with certain plants. We also recommend checking your boots before putting them on, to make sure no tiny creatures are sheltering inside. And when you walk on forest trails, tuck the cuffs of your pants into your boots and socks to keep out ants and other insects.
When you are exploring the rainforest, our guides will advise you to never approach or unduly disturb animals. In the jungle, animals do their best to keep away from humans, but they can become alarmed if they sense a perceived threat. At Tambopata Ecolodge, we believe that the best way to see wildlife is from a safe distance, without disturbing the animals you have come to see.
As well as recommending that our guests use insect repellent, particularly at night and in the early morning and evenings, we make sure that they sleep with a mosquito net, and our rooms and other jungle lodge facilities are fully screened against insects, to ensure the comfort of our guests when they are resting and relaxing in their free time between rainforest tours.
