Ecotourism has developed greatly in recent years, and more travelers are now keen to spend time at an eco-lodge and immerse themselves in nature. But what is an eco-lodge? And what exactly is ecotourism?
From our remote yet readily accessible location in protected Amazon rainforest, around 70 kilometers (44 miles) from the nearest jungle town, at Tambopata Ecolodge we adhere closely to the guiding principles of eco-lodges and ecotourism. For more than 30 years, we have pioneered sustainable tourism in Peru, hosting visitors from all over the world, while minimizing the impact on the environment and giving travelers a fulfilling experience in nature.
At Tambopata Ecolodge, we take seriously the internationally recognized standards for qualification as an eco-lodge, in addition to our own government’s guidelines. We are situated in an unspoiled area of Amazon basin tropical forest that we work to protect for the future. To reduce to a minimum our impact on our surroundings, we produce electricity using solar panels, and we offer guidance for our guests to help them lessen their own impact on the environment.
In addition to providing comfortable accommodation and excellent food, we offer our guests ecoadventure excursions by boat and on trail walks. During these activities, guests are accompanied by an experienced boat crew, and by professional nature interpretation guides who have received naturalist training and have extensive local knowledge of the natural habitat. Our guides are all well-qualified to inform visitors about the local flora, and their intimate knowledge of the forest means they know where to find fascinating examples of the Amazon’s unique fauna.
While our focus is on ensuring that our guests have a great rainforest vacation, we also offer them the opportunity to learn more about the importance and value of a healthy ecosystems, while showing them how to enjoy the Amazon without negatively impacting it.
Another of our goals is to benefit the local economy by attracting visitors to the area, and at the same time demonstrating to the local population that ecotourism is a more sustainable way to earn money in the long run, rather than modifying or destroying delicate ecosystems in the quest for short-term gain.
At Tambopata Ecolodge, we believe that ecotourism should make our guests feel good, while at the same time we work to protect Amazon fauna and flora, raise awareness of environmental issues, educate new generations on the importance of protecting our planet, and conserve the small corner of the natural world that we call home.
