Stick insects – Tambopata is home to creatures great and small
31 August 2026 (97 visits)Stick insects are among the most remarkable masters of camouflage in the animal kingdom. They belong to the order Phasmatodea, which can be translated as "phantom" or "apparition", and they have evolved to mimic perfectly twigs, branches and leaves, in order to evade predators. Around the world, there are more than 3000 species of stick insect. Most are found in tropical forest habitats like the Tambopata rainforest here in Peru, where we offer travelers our all-included immersive jungle tours, although some species also inhabit temperate zones.
Stick insects’ bodies are elongated and cylindrical. They have slender legs and are usually green or a mottled brown in color. Their unique physical structure enables them to disguise themselves perfectly and blend in, entirely unseen, in the forest settings that are their preferred habitat.
In addition to their perfect camouflage, they are able to protect themselves from predation by remaining absolutely motionless for many hours, and some species are even known to sway gently from side to side, in order to mimic more effectively a twig being blown by the wind.
To avoid the unwanted attention of birds, reptiles and small mammals, stick insects remain hidden during the daytime, only becoming active at night. After dark, they feed on leaves and berries.
As well as being remarkable for their expertise in camouflage, stick insects are also extraordinary for their ability to reproduce through parthenogenesis. Female stick insects are able to produce viable, fertilized eggs without the need to mate with a male of the species. As a result of this process, the eggs that hatch are all clones of their mother. Stick insects only produce a mix of male and female offspring when sexual reproduction occurs.
In another amazing feat of camouflage, females tend to drop their eggs in loose clusters onto the forest floor, where they look like plant seeds.
